Going Green!

With rising fuel cost and a concern for the environment, Jaybird Farms has taken steps towards sustainability.  In 2008, a corn furnace was purchased and installed in the greenhouse to provide heat for tender seedlings.  The corn is grown on the farm, harvested, shelled and dried.  When it has reached the correct moisture level (less is better), it is put in the furnace.  A small amount of purchased wood pellets are mixed in with the corn, to provide a more consistent burn level. 

 

"The corn furnace has provided considerable savings to us in our heating cost" says Vivian Pfankuch, owner.  "We feel grateful that we are able to produce our own fuel and help the environment at the same time!  A corn furnace isn't for everyone in the greenhouse business, but it has worked well for us."
